When we inspected the helmet back at the car, we found what we'd missed before: a hairline crack running through the foam from that first impact, hidden under the outer shell.
Here's what most of us don't talk about: your helmet isn't a permanent piece of gear. It's a consumable item with a shelf life, and most riders have no idea when theirs has expired—or how to tell if it's already compromised from impacts we've forgotten about or damage we've never noticed.
After a decade of riding and more falls than I care to count, I've learned that the five minutes you spend checking your helmet before the season starts might be the most important safety ritual you never knew you needed.
Why Your Helmet Isn't What You Think It Is
When you buy a helmet, you're not buying a hard hat. You're buying a one-time impact absorber that works through controlled destruction. The foam inside—typically expanded polystyrene—is engineered to compress and crack during impact, dissipating the energy that would otherwise transfer to your skull.
Think of it like a crumple zone in a car. It's designed to break so you don't have to.
The problem? Most of us don't crash hard enough to see obvious damage. We take smaller hits—branches, lift bars, that time you bonked your head getting into the car—that compress the foam internally without cracking the outer shell. Over time, these micro-compressions add up. Your helmet looks fine on the outside but has lost its ability to protect you when it actually matters.
Even without impacts, helmet materials degrade naturally. UV exposure from sunny lift rides breaks down the molecular structure of the foam. Temperature swings—from hot cars to freezing chairlifts—cause expansion and contraction that weakens the material. The oils from your skin and hair, sweat, and general wear all contribute to foam deterioration. It's not a matter of if your helmet will degrade, but when.
Most manufacturers recommend replacing helmets every three to five years regardless of visible wear. But here's the reality: I've met countless riders who've worn the same helmet for seven, eight, even ten years. They figure if it's not cracked, it's fine. That's not how helmet safety works.
The Five-Point Pre-Season Check
Before you click into your bindings this year, give your helmet a proper inspection. I run through this sequence every fall, usually when I'm pulling my gear out of storage and getting stoked for opening day. It takes maybe ten minutes, and it's given me peace of mind more times than I can count.
Check One: The Foam Integrity Test
Start by removing any liners, pads, or audio systems so you can see the bare foam. Hold the helmet up to bright light—I usually do this in my garage under my workbench light—and examine the interior surface carefully.
Look for compression marks. These appear as slight indentations or shiny spots where the foam has been compressed. Run your fingers across the entire interior. The foam should have a consistent, slightly rough texture everywhere. Any smooth or glossy areas indicate compression, which means the foam has already absorbed an impact and may not protect you fully in another one.
Search for cracks. Look for any hairline fractures in the foam, especially around ventilation channels where the material is thinner. Even tiny cracks—the width of a hair—compromise the helmet's structure. I use a bright flashlight and really get in there. What looks fine in dim light often reveals problems under closer inspection.
Check for delamination. This is where the foam separates from the hard outer shell. Gently flex the helmet by pressing on opposite sides—don't force it or bend it dramatically, just apply light pressure. You shouldn't see any gaps or movement between the foam and the shell. If the foam moves independently from the shell, the bonding has failed and the helmet needs to be replaced.
Last season, I found delamination on a helmet I'd owned for just two years. There was no visible damage from the outside, but when I flexed it slightly, I could see a quarter-inch gap between the foam and shell at the temple. I'd been wearing a compromised helmet all season without knowing it. That was a sobering moment.
Check Two: The Shell Inspection
The hard outer shell is your first line of defense, but it's also a diagnostic tool—it shows you what's happening inside. Examine the entire exterior in good light, rotating the helmet slowly and looking from different angles.
Surface cracks are non-negotiable. Any crack in the shell, no matter how small, means the helmet has absorbed an impact and the foam beneath has compressed. Replace it immediately. Don't convince yourself a small crack is fine. Don't plan to replace it "at the end of the season." Do it now.
Look for stress marks. These appear as whitish or lighter-colored lines in the plastic, especially around vents, the brim, or anywhere the shell curves sharply. Stress marks indicate the shell has flexed beyond its normal range and likely compressed the foam beneath. Even without a visible crack, this is a red flag.
Check for dents or flat spots. Run your hand over the entire shell. It should be smooth and uniformly curved. Even without cracks, a dent means impact, and impact means the foam underneath has likely compressed. If any part of the shell doesn't have its original curve, the protective capacity is reduced.
I've learned to trust my hands more than my eyes for this. Sometimes a dent is subtle enough that you don't see it, but you can feel it when you run your palm over the surface.
Check Three: The Retention System
Your helmet only works if it stays on your head. I know that sounds obvious, but I've seen helmets come off in crashes because riders never checked their straps. The retention system—straps, buckles, and adjustment mechanisms—needs to function perfectly every single time.
Inspect strap condition. Look for fraying, especially where straps thread through buckles or adjustment sliders. Check the stitching at every connection point. Then tug hard on each strap—really pull it. It shouldn't stretch more than a tiny bit, and you definitely shouldn't see any stitches separating or material tearing.
Test buckle function. Click the chin buckle closed and open twenty times in a row. Yeah, twenty. It should engage positively every single time without sticking, jamming, or requiring excessive force. If it's temperamental now—if it sometimes doesn't click in smoothly—it'll fail when you need it most. Buckles don't get better with age.
Verify the adjustment mechanism. Most helmets have a dial or strap system at the back for fit adjustment. Tighten and loosen it through its full range of motion. The mechanism should move smoothly without catching or requiring force, and it should hold position firmly when you set it. A loose adjuster means the helmet will shift during a fall, and a helmet that shifts can't protect you properly.
Here's a test I learned from a ski patroller friend: Put the helmet on and buckle it properly—as you would for riding. Then, without moving your head, try to rotate the helmet side-to-side and front-to-back with your hands. You should barely be able to shift it. If the helmet moves more than an inch in any direction, the retention system isn't doing its job. Either the straps need adjustment, or the system is worn out.
Check Four: The Comfort Layer Assessment
The pads and liners seem like they're just about comfort, but they're actually part of the safety system. They help position the helmet correctly on your head and prevent it from shifting during regular use. When they break down, the helmet doesn't sit at the right angle, which affects how well it protects you.
Test pad compression. Press firmly on all the interior pads—the forehead pad, the side pads, the rear padding, all of it. They should spring back immediately when you release pressure. If any pads stay compressed or feel mushy, they've broken down and won't hold the helmet in the right position. This matters more than you'd think. A helmet that sits too low on your forehead or too far back on your head leaves critical areas exposed.
Check attachment security. Every pad should be firmly attached, usually with Velcro or snaps. Tug on them. If pads are loose, barely hanging on, or falling off completely, the helmet won't sit correctly. Most helmets have replacement pads available—it's worth investing in new ones rather than replacing the whole helmet if that's the only issue.
Assess cleanliness. This sounds minor, but built-up oils, salt from sweat, and bacteria actually degrade foam over time. If your pads are crusty, discolored, or smell like a high school locker room, they need replacing. Many pads are washable—check your helmet's manual—but if they're truly nasty, just get new ones. Your head (and anyone near you on the lift) will thank you.
Check Five: The Age Verification
Find the manufacture date. It's usually on a sticker inside the helmet or molded into the foam or shell itself. Look carefully—sometimes it's in an unexpected spot, like inside the adjustment mechanism or under a removable pad.
If your helmet is older than five years, replace it. Full stop. No exceptions.
I don't care if it looks pristine. I don't care if you've barely used it. I don't care if you stored it in a climate-controlled closet wrapped in silk. The materials have degraded beyond the manufacturer's safety specifications. Foam breaks down chemically over time, adhesives weaken, plastics become brittle. A five-year-old helmet might still provide some protection, but it won't provide the protection it was designed to deliver.
If you can't find a manufacture date anywhere on the helmet, assume it's too old and replace it. It's not worth the risk.
What Actually Matters (And What Doesn't)
After years of doing these inspections—both on my own helmets and helping friends check theirs—I've learned to separate real safety issues from cosmetic ones. This matters because it's easy to get paranoid and want to replace a helmet over something that's completely normal, or conversely, to downplay something that's actually serious.
Things you can ignore:
- Scratches on the shell: Not a problem unless they're deep enough to show white stress marks underneath or expose the foam. Surface scratches are just character.
- Worn graphics or stickers: Purely cosmetic. If the stickers are peeling or the printed design is fading, it doesn't affect safety at all.
- Slight discoloration of foam: Normal aging from UV exposure. The white or light-colored foam often develops a slightly yellowish tinge over time.
- Missing vent plugs: Most helmets come with removable vent covers or plugs for different weather conditions. If you've lost them, it doesn't affect safety—just warmth and ventilation.
- Goggle strap wear on the shell: That ring of micro-scratches where your goggle strap sits is completely normal. It's surface-level and not structural damage.
Things that demand immediate attention:
- Any crack in the shell or foam, no matter how small
- Delamination between foam and shell
- Dents or flat spots in the shell
- Dark discoloration combined with soft spots in the foam (indicates moisture damage)
- Significant amounts of carved-out foam from aftermarket modifications
- Retention systems that won't tighten or hold securely
The key distinction is whether damage affects the helmet's structure or just its appearance. If you're unsure, err on the side of caution.
The Replacement Decision Matrix
Over the years, I've developed a mental framework for deciding whether to keep or replace a helmet. Here's how I think about it:
Automatic replacement—no questions, no hesitation:
- Any crack in shell or foam, no matter how small
- Any delamination between foam and shell
- Any dent or flat spot in the shell
- Helmet older than five years from manufacture date
- Any significant impact you remember, even if there's no visible damage
- Retention system that doesn't function smoothly or can't secure the helmet properly
Probable replacement—strong lean toward getting a new one:
- Multiple compression marks in the foam
- Stress marks visible in the shell plastic
- Loose retention system that can't be tightened adequately
- Pads that won't stay attached and can't be replaced
- Extensive discoloration combined with soft spots in foam
- Any moisture damage or signs of water penetration
Keep riding, but monitor closely:
- Minor surface scratches that don't show stress marks
- Worn or fading graphics
- Slight uniform discoloration without soft spots
- Missing vent plugs (but consider replacing them for comfort)
- Superficial strap fraying that doesn't affect core stitching
- Normal goggle strap wear marks
When in doubt, replace it. I know helmets can be expensive—anywhere from sixty bucks for a basic model to several hundred for premium features. But here's the thing: a new helmet costs less than a single night in the emergency room. A traumatic brain injury costs everything—your ability to work, to ride, to think clearly, to be yourself.
I'd rather spend money on a new helmet I might not have needed than save money on one I definitely did.
The Impact You Forgot About
Here's something I learned the hard way: we're terrible at remembering minor impacts. We crash hard, we remember. But all those little bonks and bumps? They disappear from memory almost immediately.
Three seasons ago, I started keeping a small notebook in my gear bag where I log any head contact—even stuff that seems completely insignificant at the time. Bonked a lift tower getting on? Write it down. Knocked heads with a friend on the chairlift? Log it. Hit a low branch in the trees? Note it. Dropped the helmet in the parking lot? Record it.

Here's what's worked for me: I pair the helmet check with other pre-season rituals that I'm already motivated to do. When I'm waxing my board and checking my bindings, the helmet gets inspected. When I'm organizing my gear closet and making sure I have all my layers ready, the helmet gets a look. It happens in my garage on the same weekend every fall, usually late October. I've got good light, all my tools are accessible, and I'm already in gear-maintenance mode.
I also take photos of my helmets from multiple angles before the season starts. I shoot the exterior from all sides, close-ups of the interior foam, and detail shots of the straps and buckles. If I question something mid-season—did that crack appear recently or was it always there?—I can compare current condition to those baseline images. It's harder to convince yourself a crack was always there when you've got photo evidence from two months earlier showing it wasn't.
Another trick: I keep a reminder in my phone that goes off every year on October 15th. "Check your helmet. Check your friends' helmets." That little ping is enough to get me started, and once I start, I finish. The activation energy is the hardest part.
What We Owe Each Other
I think about my friend in the trees more than I probably should. He was lucky—the second fall wasn't hard, and the crack in his helmet hadn't fully compromised it yet. When my friends pull their gear out for the season, I ask to see their helmets. Not in a preachy way, but genuinely—"Hey, let me check something real quick." Most of the time, everything's fine. But I've found cracked helmets that riders didn't know about. I've found retention systems that were barely functioning. I've found helmets that were seven, eight years old, still being used because nobody had ever mentioned they should be replaced.
Those conversations feel awkward for about thirty seconds, but they matter. Nobody wants to hear that they need to spend money on new safety gear when their season pass already drained their bank account. But they also don't want to end up in the hospital, or worse, because they were riding with compromised protection.
The Real Cost of Compromising
Let me put this in perspective. A mid-range helmet costs maybe a hundred and fifty bucks. If you ride thirty days a season for three years—ninety days total—that's less than two dollars per day to protect your brain.
Compare that to the cost of a head injury. Even a "minor" concussion can sideline you for weeks, affect your work performance, impact your ability to drive, cause headaches and cognitive issues for months. More serious traumatic brain injuries can permanently alter who you are—your personality, your memory, your ability to function independently.
I know someone who took a relatively minor fall without a helmet about five years ago. He's still dealing with headaches. He still has memory issues. He lost his job because he couldn't focus. He hasn't been on a snowboard since.
A helmet can't prevent every injury. But it drastically reduces the risk of severe outcomes. And that's only true if the helmet is actually functioning as designed—not degraded, not compromised, not past its effective lifespan.
Your Pre-Season Checklist
Here's what I recommend you do before opening day:
One month before you ride:
- Pull out your helmet and do the full five-point inspection
- Take photos from multiple angles for future reference
- Log the manufacture date if you haven't already
- Order replacement pads if needed
- Be honest with yourself about what you find
If you're replacing your helmet:
- Don't donate, sell, or give away your old helmet
- Physically destroy it so it can't be used—I usually take shears to the straps and crack the shell with a hammer
- Recycle what you can through local programs
- Factor helmet cost into your season budget, just like you do for your pass
Opening day:
- Do a quick check of your retention system
- Make sure the fit is still correct—helmets can shift in storage
- Verify that any accessories like audio systems or camera mounts are secure
Throughout the season:
- After any impact—even minor ones—inspect your helmet
- If you're uncertain whether an impact was significant enough to matter, replace the helmet anyway
- Keep that impact log in your gear bag
- Check your retention system periodically

Your helmet is the one piece of gear you hope never has to do its job. But when it does—in that split-second you didn't see coming on that run you've done a hundred times—you want to know it's ready. Not probably ready. Not mostly ready. Completely, undoubtedly ready.
So before you load up for the season, before you watch the first snowfall come in, before you obsess over base depths and powder forecasts, spend five minutes with your helmet. Really look at it. Check it properly. Be honest about what you find.
And if there's any doubt—any doubt at all—replace it.
