Your Gravel Bike Bag Belongs at the Trailhead
By: Wildhorn OutfittersI used to start every gravel ride the same way. Kneel beside the bike, unzip a seat pack, dig past a spare tube, then remember the pump sat in the handlebar roll. By the time I found everything, my legs had cooled down and my patience was gone. I had done it to myself. The bike felt loaded and twitchy on descents, all because I had strapped half my garage to the frame for a two hour loop.
Soft bike-mounted bags solved a real problem for riders who need to carry sleeping gear and food for days. Race footage and route films spread that look far beyond the people who actually need it. Now it is normal to see a full frame bag and a handlebar roll on a twelve mile rail trail ride with a gas station at mile eight. If that is your ride, you are carrying a lot of gear you never touch.
One duffel at the car does more work
My current setup is simple. A Wildhorn Outfitters Gulch 70L Bike Duffel sits on the floor of my car. It holds a helmet, shoes, pump, first aid kit, spare tube, tubeless plugs, chain lube, multitool, arm warmers, rain shell, and a clean shirt for the drive home. On the bike I keep a small top tube pouch for snacks and my phone. If the route has no water for a while, I add one bottle cage and go.
Some riders ask what happens when I flat halfway through. On most day loops the car is only a few miles away. A tube and CO2 live in the top tube pouch. The duffel handles everything else. I spent years fumbling with zippers on the side of a dirt road before I figured out that most of my gear never needed to leave the car.
Wildhorn makes two bike duffels built for this system. The Gulch 70L is my go-to for solo mornings and quick shuttles. It fits a full kit without swallowing the whole cargo area. The Big Mesa 90L comes out when I pack for two, throw in knee pads and a full face helmet, or need to stash cold weather layers on a shoulder season start. Both are designed in Utah by people who ride the same gravel, and both carry the Limited Lifetime Warranty.
70 liters or 90 liters
Seventy liters covers most riders. One full kit, a compact floor pump, spare tubes and plugs, a small first aid kit, lunch, and a dry set of clothes all fit with room to spare. The bag slips into a trunk or hatchback without eating the whole space, and after a ride you can toss muddy shoes in one end, zip it shut, and drive home without a second thought.
Go up to 90 liters when you pack for two people or when a shuttle day demands full face helmets, pads, and a second set of gloves.
Pack it the same way every time
Pack the duffel in the same order every outing, and the trailhead becomes a quick stop instead of a puzzle.
The order that works
- Bottom: tools, tubes, plugs, pump, lube, and first aid. Heavy stuff stays low and stable.
- Middle: post ride clothes, towel, clean socks. You will not touch these until the end.
- Top: ride layers, gloves, and snacks you might grab before heading out.
- Shoes and helmet: park them at one end so you can pull them first.
- Wet kit: a small stuff sack inside the duffel catches rain jackets and muddy socks before they soak everything else.
At the trailhead, stand the duffel on its end and leave the top open. It works like a basecamp locker. When you return, sweaty gear goes straight in, the clean shirt comes out, and you are not kneeling in gravel repacking a seat bag.
When bike mounted bags earn their place
Overnight and multi-day riders still need frame bags and seat packs. Sleeping gear, extra water, and days of food do not fit in a duffel that stays with the car. For everyone else, those bags solve a problem you do not have. Keep the bike light, keep the load in the car, and save the strap system for the one trip a year that truly needs it.
Gravel riding runs on long stretches of dirt, quick descents, and the feeling of being far from pavement without being far from a good sandwich. The best bag for most rides is the one that gets you rolling sooner and keeps your kit together when you get back. Stash your gear in a Gulch 70L or fill the Big Mesa 90L, grab a friend, and go ride.
