The Part of Your Goggles' Story Nobody Talks About (And Why It Matters Most)

That box has been living rent-free in my head ever since.
We love talking about sustainable gear—recycled materials, eco-friendly manufacturing, all that good stuff. But here's the question almost nobody asks: what happens to your goggles when they're done? Where do they actually go? And maybe more importantly, why aren't we designing them with that ending in mind from day one?
Most sustainability conversations stop at the factory door. I want to go further—into the messy, uncomfortable reality of what happens when gear dies, and why that might be the most important part of the whole story.
The Hidden Problem Sitting in All Our Closets
Last season, I took apart an old pair of goggles just to see what I was dealing with. Seven different materials in one product. TPU frames, polycarbonate lenses, three different foam densities, polyester straps with silicone, tiny metal rivets. Each one needs its own recycling process. Most of them can't be recycled at all through normal channels.
Here's the scale: about 15 million pairs of ski and snowboard goggles sell worldwide every year. At roughly 200 grams each, that's 3,000 metric tons annually. These things typically last 3–5 years, though plenty get tossed earlier for scratches or upgrades.
Do that math and it gets uncomfortable pretty fast.
We're out here saying we love the mountains, that we want to protect wild places. But we've built a whole system around buying new gear every couple seasons. That contradiction is staring us in the face, and we mostly just... look away.
What If We Started at the End Instead?
Here's my weird take: maybe we should design goggles starting with how they'll come apart, not how they go together.
Most "sustainable" design works like this: pick eco-friendly materials, manufacture efficiently, ship responsibly, cross your fingers that people recycle properly. The problem? That assumes recycling systems actually exist for complex products like goggles. Spoiler: they mostly don't.
So flip it around. Start every design decision with: "How will this thing come apart? Where will each piece go? Who's going to handle it?"
There's a term for this—Design for Disassembly. Sounds boring but it's actually pretty radical.
I talked to a product designer last year who'd worked in the outdoor industry for ages. She said something that stuck with me: "We spend six months perfecting how something goes together and maybe six minutes thinking about how it comes apart. That's completely backwards."
The fix isn't rocket science. Use mechanical connections instead of permanent gluing. Make foam clip in rather than bond in. Design lenses that pop out without tools. Build straps that detach at obvious points. Keep each material type separate and pure.
It's not flashy. You won't see ads about it. But it's the stuff that actually matters if we're serious about sustainability.

The Weird Truth About "Green" Materials
Plot twist: sometimes the "eco-friendly" material choice actually makes end-of-life worse than conventional stuff.
Take bio-based plastics. They sound perfect—made from plants instead of oil. But most bio-plastics don't actually break down in real-world conditions. They need industrial composting facilities that barely exist. Even worse, they contaminate regular plastic recycling because they look the same but have totally different properties.
I've seen goggles marketed as sustainable because they use recycled ocean plastic. Cool starting point. But what happens when those goggles break? Usually they can't be recycled again because they've been mixed with other materials. They end up in the exact same landfill as regular goggles—we've just delayed the problem by a few years.
Real material sustainability comes down to three questions:
- Can this material actually be reclaimed when the product dies?
- Does the infrastructure exist to process it?
- Is there actual demand for the reclaimed material?
If any answer is "no," you haven't solved anything. You've just moved the problem around.
Sometimes the most sustainable choice is virgin plastic designed in a single polymer type that can actually be collected, sorted, and turned into new products. Less sexy than recycled content percentages, but way more likely to actually close the loop.
I Destroyed Three Pairs of Goggles to Learn This
Last April, after the resorts shut down, I ran an experiment. Took three different pairs of goggles and completely tore them apart. Timed myself, documented the tools needed, separated every component.
Here's what happened:
Glued construction: 47 minutes, needed a heat gun and prying tools, destroyed the frame in the process, ended up with 23 pieces that were still stuck together.
Mixed fasteners: 31 minutes, needed three different screwdrivers, got 15 components but some materials were still bonded.
Clip-based design: 12 minutes, just my hands, ended with 8 clean material streams completely separated.
That third approach? That's where things need to go. Simple mechanical connections. Fewer material types. Clear separation points.
But here's the gut punch: even with perfect disassembly, I still couldn't recycle most of it. The nearest specialty recycling program was three states away. My local recycling wouldn't touch any of it because of the size and material complexity.
You can design the most thoughtfully disassemblable product in the world, but if there's nowhere for those materials to go, you're still stuck.
The Product That Never Needs Replacing Wins
Eight seasons back, I caught an edge hard and went face-first into heavy spring snow. My goggles took the impact—frame cracked clean down the side. These were expensive, barely a year old. I was pissed.
Called the company about replacement parts. They didn't sell them. Asked about repairs. Didn't offer them. My options: buy new goggles or rig something with glue and prayers.
That moment changed how I think about gear entirely.
The most sustainable product is the one you never have to replace.
Repairability beats recycled content every single time. A pair of goggles that lasts ten seasons through replacement lenses and foam and straps? Exponentially better for the planet than two pairs that last five seasons each, even if those pairs are 100% recycled materials.
The math is simple:
- Manufacturing takes energy, materials, shipping
- Repair takes a tiny fraction of those resources
- Multiple short-life products stack up environmental costs
- One long-life product minimizes everything

I've been running the same goggle frame for three seasons now. Swap lenses based on light, replaced foam once when it packed out. Same fit, same function, way less waste.
The Goggles That Should Exist But Don't (Yet)
Let me describe a pair of goggles that don't exist yet but absolutely should.
The frame is single-material TPU—tough, flexible, fully recyclable if you can get it to the right place. But you probably won't need to because it's nearly indestructible with normal use.
The lens mounts mechanically with a standard interface. When it scratches (and it will—I've never met a snowboarder who hasn't eaten it at least a few times per season), you pop it out and replace it. The old lens goes back to get ground down and remanufactured into new lenses. Actual closed loop.
The foam is modular—three separate pieces that clip in. When the face foam compresses after a season of sweat and face plants, you replace that section. The rest keeps going for years. Each foam piece is pure EVA or pure polyurethane, making recycling actually possible.
The strap clicks into a rail system. When the elastic gives out after seasons of UV and stretching, you replace the strap. Buckles and adjustments stay with the frame.
Everything's mechanical. Nothing's glued. Each component is designed for its actual lifespan—frame lasts a decade, lenses 2–3 seasons, foam 3–4 seasons, straps 4–5 seasons. Replace what dies, keep what doesn't.
And the crucial part: the manufacturer takes back every component, sorts by condition, feeds them into the next production cycle. Good components get refurbished and sold as certified pre-owned. Worn-out components get broken down and remanufactured.
You don't really "own" them in the traditional sense. You're using them, maintaining them, upgrading as needed, participating in an actual circular system.
This isn't science fiction. The tech exists. The materials exist. What's missing is willingness to disrupt the business model built on selling complete new products every season.
The Money Problem Nobody Wants to Mention
Real talk: the current system makes way more money selling new complete products than selling replacement parts or running take-back programs.
New goggles retail for maybe $180. Good margins. Replacement lenses sell for $50 with smaller margins. Repair services cost labor. Take-back programs need expensive logistics.
The whole retail world is optimized for new product sales. Staff are trained to sell complete units. Marketing pushes new models. Trade shows spotlight next season's innovations.
When sustainability initiatives exist, they often work more like marketing than actual business model changes. Launch a "recycled materials" line but keep the core business running on annual product cycles and planned obsolescence.
I'm not saying anyone's deliberately making stuff that breaks early. But the economic incentives don't line up with making products last as long as possible. Until they do, we'll keep seeing small improvements instead of real transformation.
What would it take to change this?
Right-to-repair laws: Legal requirements to sell replacement parts and provide repair info. Exists for cars and increasingly for electronics. Why not outdoor gear?
Extended producer responsibility: Laws requiring companies to fund and manage end-of-life collection and processing. If disposal costs fell on manufacturers, they'd design to minimize those costs fast.
Consumer mindset shift: Valuing durability and repairability over newness. Treating gear maintenance as part of the outdoor experience, not a hassle.
Retail evolution: Moving from pure product sales to service models with ongoing customer relationships through repairs, upgrades, and components.
None of it's easy. All of it requires giving up profit, convenience, old habits. But it's the only path to actual sustainability instead of green-washing.
What You Can Do Right Now
You might be thinking: "Cool, the system's broken. What am I supposed to do?"
Fair. Here's what actually works, based on years of testing this stuff in the mountains:
Take Care of Your Gear Like It Matters
After every session, I let my goggles air dry completely. Clean lenses with actual microfiber cloths, never my jacket. Store them in a hard case, not loose in my bag. This has extended lens life from two seasons to four just through better care.
Small stuff compounds. Rinse off salt and minerals after spring riding. Keep them out of direct sun when you're not using them. Never touch the inside of the lens with your fingers. These habits prevent most of the damage that leads to early replacement.
Learn to Fix Things
I've stitched loose straps, replaced foam with craft store sheets cut to fit, even plastic-welded minor frame cracks. YouTube has tutorials for everything. Basic gear repair isn't magic—it's just skills you haven't learned yet.
There's something deeply satisfying about fixing your own stuff. You understand how it works, what fails first, how to prevent those failures. It connects you to your gear in ways buying new never does.
Buy Smart from the Start
When I look at goggles now, I check for:
- Replaceable lenses that swap easily
- Removable and replaceable foam
- Mechanical connections instead of glued assemblies
- Companies that actually sell replacement parts
- Designs using single-material components where possible

Their answers (or silence) influences what I buy. Companies need to hear that customers care about this. One email might not change anything, but enough of them will.
Just Buy Less
The most sustainable goggle is the one you don't buy because your current pair still works. I've stopped chasing every new lens tech or frame design. If my goggles function and fit properly, they stay in rotation.
This goes against everything consumer culture screams at us, but it's liberating. Instead of browsing new gear every season, I spend that energy planning trips, researching zones, actually riding.
Keep Gear in Circulation
I've bought and sold used goggles, keeping them useful longer. Gear past its prime for all-season use might be perfect for someone just starting out or as a backup.
There's a growing secondhand culture in outdoor communities. Supporting it keeps products in use and builds connections with other riders.
Push for Better Systems
I've contacted resorts about gear collection programs. Talked to shops about repair services. Most won't change based on one voice, but they need to hear there's demand.
Real change needs infrastructure—drop-off spots, repair techs, reverse logistics. That infrastructure won't appear unless customers show they'll use it.
The Real Question Here
Here's what I wish someone had told me fifteen years ago when I started snowboarding: every piece of gear you buy is a vote for what kind of outdoor industry you want.
Do you want an industry selling you new stuff every season while filling landfills? Or one that designs for longevity, repairs what breaks, and actually closes material loops?
We say we love nature. Say we want to preserve wild places for the next generation. But our buying patterns tell a different story. We're loving these places to death, one discarded product at a time.
The goggle conversation is really about something bigger: can outdoor recreation actually be sustainable, or is that just a nice-sounding contradiction?
I don't have all the answers. But I know where to start: honest conversations about end-of-life, design decisions that prioritize taking things apart, business models that value repair over replacement, and customers demanding better.

What Caring Actually Looks Like
I saw my buddy with the box of old goggles last month. We talked about what to do. Some pairs we refurbished—new foam, cleaned lenses, straightened frames. Donated those to a youth skiing program.
Others were truly cooked. We pulled them apart as much as we could, separating materials. Metal bits went to scrap recycling. Some plastic qualified for specialized programs we found through research. A few pieces still hit the trash—there just wasn't infrastructure to handle them.
But the process mattered. It forced us to confront what "throwing away" actually means. There is no "away." There's only somewhere else, and we're responsible for what happens there.
Since then, I've gotten way more deliberate about gear purchases. I think in decades, not seasons. I value products I can repair over products with the newest features. I support companies working toward circular systems, even when those systems are imperfect and still being figured out.
And I talk about this stuff with other riders. On chairlifts, in parking lots, around fires after backcountry tours. The conversations get awkward sometimes—nobody wants to hear they're part of the problem. But they're necessary.
Because the mountains don't care about our marketing or our retail calendars. They operate on geological time, following patterns set over millennia. Snow falls, compacts, melts, returns. A perfect closed loop.
Maybe it's time our gear reflected that same logic.
The Next Ten Seasons
The next generation of snowboard goggles needs to be designed with death in mind—not morbidly, but acknowledging that every product's life ends, and what happens then matters more than we've admitted.
The technology exists. The materials exist. The design principles exist. What we need is the will to implement them, even when it's harder and less immediately profitable than business as usual.
This isn't about sacrifice. It's about alignment—matching our actions with what we say we value. If we truly love the mountains, if we genuinely want to preserve access to wild places, then we need to design products that honor those places.

It's not perfect. But it's better than ignoring the problem and hoping it disappears.
Because in the mountains, nothing disappears. It just changes form and waits for you to encounter it again.

Next time you're gearing up for a powder day, really look at your goggles. Think about where they came from, how they're made, where they'll go when you're done.
That awareness might change how you ride. It should definitely change what you buy.
The future of sustainable snowboarding isn't about finding the perfect eco-material or ideal recycling program. It's about designing products that acknowledge their own mortality, building systems to manage that mortality responsibly, and shifting our mindset from consumption to stewardship.
It's recognizing that the most sustainable goggle is the one that lasts, can be repaired, and eventually gets reborn as something new.
