The Helmet Check Most Riders Skip: Inspect the “Connection Points,” Not Just the Shell

But bouncing between mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding, and skiing has changed how I look at protective gear. On a bike, you learn that failures rarely happen in the big obvious parts—they show up at the interfaces: where two things meet, rub, flex, or get adjusted. Hiking teaches you to respect the slow stuff—UV, sweat, dirt, and time. Snow sports add another twist: conditions swing fast, and anything depending on fit, friction, or foam deserves more than a parking-lot glance.
So here’s a DIY safety check that’s a little different. Instead of obsessing over “Is there a crack?” we’re going to treat your helmet like what it actually is: a system. Shell, liner, straps, buckle, adjuster, goggles—everything working together. That’s the stuff that keeps the helmet where it belongs when things get weird.
Why “Looks Fine” Isn’t the Same as “Rides Safe”
A helmet can look totally normal and still be compromised. Not in a dramatic, horror-story way—just in the real-world way gear ages and gets used.
- Foam can compress from an impact and lose performance without showing a clean, obvious crack.
- Straps and anchors can loosen over time, changing how the helmet holds position when you fall.
- Fit can drift as comfort pads pack out or your usual beanie/hood setup changes.
- Goggles can push the helmet around without you noticing—until you’re bouncing through chop or taking a tumble.
If you’ve ever had a day where your helmet felt “a little off” and you couldn’t explain it, it’s often one of those system pieces quietly shifting.
The 60-Second System Check (Do This at the Car)
This is the routine I actually use because it’s fast enough to be realistic. One minute now beats trying to solve a fit issue with frozen fingers at the top of a windy chair.
1) Head-to-Helmet: the shake test
Put the helmet on and buckle it. Shake your head “no” a few times—quick and snappy.
- The helmet should move with your head, not lag and then catch up.
- If it shifts around, you’re already starting from a compromised fit.
2) Retention: the roll-off test
With the strap buckled, try to roll the helmet forward off your forehead, then backward off the back of your head.
- If it can roll far enough to expose a lot of forehead, or slide way back toward your neck, your retention and strap setup isn’t doing its job.
I’ve seen this show up as the classic “my helmet moved and my goggles went crooked” moment after a totally average fall. That’s not just chaos—often it’s a retention issue.
3) Strap geometry: look for the clean V
The side straps should form a V under each ear. If the V is way down on your jaw or pulled too far behind your ear, the helmet is more likely to shift in a crash.
4) Strap tension: the open-mouth test
Buckle up, then open your mouth wide like you’re biting into a big sandwich.
- You should feel the helmet pull down slightly on the crown.
- If nothing changes, the strap is likely too loose.
5) Buckle reality: test it with gloves
Do one buckle/unbuckle cycle with your gloves or mitts on.
- If it’s finicky, you’re more likely to ride “just this lap” unbuckled.
- If it doesn’t feel like a clean, confident click, that’s worth paying attention to.
The Deep-Dive DIY Inspection (10-15 Minutes, Once a Month)
This is what I do at the start of the season, and again mid-season if I’m riding a lot. Also: any time the helmet takes a hit that makes me pause.
A) Shell + seams: check the stress zones
Don’t only scan for obvious cracks. Spend a minute on the places that take constant little abuse.
- Run your fingers around the entire rim where the shell meets the liner.
- Check for hairline splitting, separation, or spots that feel “wavy” compared to the rest.
- Inspect around vents—openings can concentrate stress.
B) Foam liner: “compression map” it
This is the part most people skip, and it’s the part that can reveal damage you won’t see from the outside.
- Remove the comfort pads/liners if they’re removable.
- Under good light, look for dents, ripples, or crushed-looking zones.
- Press gently with your thumbs around the foam in a grid pattern, comparing firmness as you go.
If you find a localized spot that feels softer or “dead” compared to everything around it, that’s a real red flag—even if the shell looks perfect.
C) Straps, stitching, and anchor points: the hidden failure mode
This is the snow-sport version of checking your bike bolts before a long descent. It’s not glamorous, but it’s where problems hide.
- Tug each strap firmly and watch the anchor points—nothing should creep, shift, or feel loose.
- Inspect stitching for fraying or loose threads.
- Check webbing for stiffness from sweat and grime (it can change how straps lay and tighten).
- Test the rear adjuster: it should tighten smoothly and hold tension run after run.
If your helmet feels great in the parking lot but slowly loosens after a few laps, that’s often not “your hair settling.” It’s usually the retention system slipping or the fit drifting.
D) Venting: conditions are part of safety
Vents sound like a comfort detail until you’re overheated, your goggles fog, and you’re wiping your face mid-run while trying to keep up with friends.
- Open and close vents fully to make sure they travel smoothly.
- Check for cracks around vent edges.
- Make sure pads aren’t blocking internal airflow channels.
Helmet + Goggles: Vision Is Part of the System
This is the interdisciplinary piece I wish more riders talked about. A helmet can fit perfectly… until your goggles push it out of position.
Put your helmet and goggles on exactly how you ride (same beanie, same hood situation, same strap placement) and check:
- Is there a big gap that exposes your forehead?
- Do the goggles push the helmet upward or backward?
- When you look up and down, does anything shift?
If goggles are forcing the helmet out of its natural seat on your head, your “good fit” is basically borrowed time.
After a Crash: A Practical Rule That Beats Guessing
Most advice lands at one extreme or the other: replace after every tap, or replace only if you see a crack. Real life is messier than that.
Here’s the rule I follow: replace your helmet after any meaningful impact, even if it looks fine.
- You felt stunned, got a headache, or needed a minute to regroup.
- Your goggles were violently displaced.
- The helmet shifted significantly on your head.
- You hit something hard (packed ice, a feature, a tree, a firm edge) rather than soft snow.
If it was a minor, glancing contact in soft snow and you feel totally normal, do the compression map and strap/anchor inspection before you decide. If anything feels off, don’t talk yourself out of it.
And a non-negotiable: if you have concussion symptoms—headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion—treat it as a medical situation first. Gear checks don’t override brain checks.
The Slow Damage Nobody Brags About
Hiking taught me this lesson the hard way: gear doesn’t only fail in dramatic moments. It fails slowly, from normal life.
- Heat exposure (like living in a hot car) can degrade materials over time.
- Crush damage from boards, boots, and bags can stress shells and compress liners.
- Harsh cleaners and chemicals can mess with plastics and adhesives.
Simple habits help a lot: let it air dry, store it where it won’t get crushed, and clean it with mild soap and water. Keep it uncomplicated.
A Checklist You Can Actually Use

- Shake test
- Roll-off test
- Clean V under ears
- Open-mouth test
- Buckle test with gloves
Monthly (10-15 minutes)
- Shell seams + vent edges
- Foam compression map (dents/soft zones)
- Strap stitching + anchors
- Rear adjuster function
- Helmet + goggles integration check
After any meaningful impact
- If you’re debating it, don’t guess—inspect hard and lean conservative.
