I ride mountain bikes, hike ridgelines, snowboard tree lines, and ski chopped-up groomers. On dirt and snow I want open ears and a soundtrack. For years swimming was the one sport where my audio stayed in the car. The reason comes down to physics, fit, and a gear category that nobody seemed in a hurry to fix. Then bone conduction arrived and laps finally got music.

The Late Start

Mountain bikers and trail runners adopted bone conduction early. Open ears mean hearing a rider behind you or a car on the shoulder. Skiers and snowboarders had helmet audio with open-ear options. Swimmers got a harder problem. Water absorbs the radio frequencies Bluetooth uses, so the signal dies almost the moment it goes under. Streaming from a phone or watch does not work in the pool. Any swim headphone has to store its own music.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • Onboard storage comes first. Streaming does not work underwater. Look for drag-and-drop MP3 storage and simple file management.
  • Physical buttons beat touch controls when your fingers are wet. Raised buttons you can feel through a swim cap make a real difference. Test them on dry land before you get in the water.
  • Fit test before you buy. Shake your head hard side to side, then mimic a flip turn. The band should not shift. If it lifts at the back, a swim cap worn over it adds the small pressure that keeps it seated.
  • Rinse after every swim. Chlorine and salt are rough on hardware. Rinse the band with fresh water, dry it, and store it out of direct sun.
  • Earplugs are optional. Some swimmers wear silicone earplugs with bone conduction for a fuller low end. Others prefer the open feeling. Try both.
