FAQ -

  • Q:

What kind of jacket is best for skiing?

    A:

For skiing or snowboarding you’ll want to find a jacket with waterproofing, insulation, and breathability. You may want to find a jacket with a hood that is compatible with your helmet. Protective pockets for your phone and other valuables are also a big plus!

  • Q:

How do I stay warm while skiing?

    A:

A proper layering system is critical to manage temps and staying dry no matter the outside environment. Make sure your outerwear offers you high quality waterproofing (5k or more) and allows moisture to vent from your body. Your base layer should be moisture-wicking (not cotton). You can also keep extremities warm with heated gloves or rechargeable hand warmers.

  • Q:

    What do waterproof ratings mean?

    A:

Imagine a 1" diameter tube with a piece of fabric underneath it. As you pour water in more pressure is applied to the fabric. A waterproof rating of 5k means 5000mm of water pressure can be applied before the fabric allows moisture through. Typically you want at least 5k or higher in your outerwear for skiing. 10k or higher is going to keep you dry in most skiing conditions while 20k will keep you dry under all but the most severe weather.

  • Q:

How many layers do I need?

    A:

The number of layers depends on conditions and personal preference. Typically you want to plan on three types of layers: base, mid, and outer. The base layer should be tight fitting and moisture wicking (not cotton). Mid-layers should provide insulation and could be down or wool. Outer layer is your jacket or shell and should be rated at least 5k waterproofing. Wildhorn jackets are insulated and may reduce the need for a mid layer on a warmer day.
